Connecting to FURNET IRC using an alternative 3rd party client

In this case this guide is made with mIRC in mind. This guide was originally taken off a Ustream forum post and edited by myself to fit our needs which in this case be Justin.TV this time around. Unfortuently it was hidden away so deep that most won't be able to find it without a little dedicated searching. This guide can ofcourse be used for any IRC client out there. If you don't want to pay for mIRC then you could give IceChat or Chatzilla a try. We also got a perfectly fine working Java chat client right here on site under the "Stream Connect" link

In mIRC options under Connect
Full Name: (Can be anything within a-z,A-Z,0-9, -, _)
Email Address: (You don't have to use a real e-mail address, but the first part will appear in your host address)
Nickname: (your FurNet user name) (Example: Duck_Man)
Alternative: (This isn't really necessary if you are using a registered FurNet user name but can be useful if in case of ghosting issues. Best is to add a _ at the end. Example: Duck_Man_)

In mIRC options under Servers
Click Add
In Add Server
Description: FurNet Chat
IRC Server: irc.furnet.org
Ports: 6667
Group: Furnet
Password: (your Furnet password here if you registered your nick with Nickserv. If this is your first visit and wish to register your nickname so nobody else uses it please visit http://www.furnet.org/index.php?page=Documentation for all the help on commands on how to do this.)

Once this is is complete you can click OK, connect by clicking on the lightning bolt in the top left corner and join my show chat by typing: /join #the-rainbow-resort

Here are a couple of optional changes to mIRC Options you could add:

In mIRC Options under IRC -> Messages
Check time stamp (To add posted time to the chat. Very useful.)
Click OK

The following steps will make mIRC notify you if someone has posted your user name in a chat by flashing.

In the Address Book (that's the icon next to the clock one) under the Highlight tab click Add

Now add in that box $me and any name your often refered to by others. You can also select a color and even a sound to be played if your name is mentioned (if you don't select anything the default color is green). Very useful if you don't want to keep watch of your window all the time but be there if somebody calls you.
